BESS 2011 Second Announcement and March Newsletter

Hi all

We are well into 2011 and BESS 2011(Northeast) is fast approaching.  It promises to be an excellent meeting and I urge you to register early.

We have an exciting programme with the usual mix of poster and podium presentations, hot topics, research and education sessions and the AGM. Please note that for morning master classes the topics in nerve injury and trauma differ from Thursday to Friday whereas the elbow arthroplasty symposium will be repeated.  Master classes will need to be pre-booked and you should contact the conference organisers, Sovereign Conference, (association@sovereignconference.co.uk) if you haven’t already reserved a place.

The AHP session on Friday afternoon will focus on ‘The Stiff Shoulder’ and we have some exciting speakers including Tim Bunker, Nigel Hanchard, Willem Fourie and Raj Sinha. It is important to emphasise that the AHP session is open to both our medical and AHP colleagues and in fact the inclusion of both is essential to ensure a balanced discussion.   Attendance is free for all registered delegates, however, should you wish to attend the AHP session only you will be required to register via the BESS website (www.bess.org.uk) @ £30.00 including refreshments and lunch.

We would urge delegates to join us at the Conference dinner at the Sage on 22nd June. This will have a musical theme and promises to be a special evening. The dinner is free to all delegates and this stunning venue gives a taste of what the Northeast really has to offer.

The members’ dinner is at the Baltic Centre and we hope members will join us for a culinary feast. Partners are welcome to attend this dinner. Please book early to avoid disappointment as we have limited numbers and a first come first served policy will be applied. A place can be booked by sending me an email on secretary@bess.org. The price for partners is £50.

Don’t forget to register before the early bird deadline, 9th of May 2011 to take advantage of competitive registration rates!

March  Newsletter

The BESS council has been busy since the last meeting and many of these updates will be presented in Newcastle. There are some important developments that I will briefly explain.

BESS fellowships

It is clear that much has changed in the last few years with regards to industry sponsorship of educational meetings, fellowships etc. The BESS council has also been considering various issues that have been raised by the membership and Industry partners with regards to sponsorship etc and has been investigating the best way to work with industry in the future.

It has been decided that all fellowships in future will be administered by BESS. The onus of making sure that the fellows spend the money they are given prudently and to police this will rest with the BESS council. All fellowships will be called BESS fellowships and will not have names of industry partners attached.

The companies that support fellowships will be asked to make the donation directly to BESS.  These companies will be acknowledged in the meetings brochure, on the BESS stand at all meetings and on the BESS website.

I am very pleased to announce that all the companies have agreed to this new way of administering fellowships.

The names of the fellowships will be changed as follows

BESS Biomet travelling Fellowship and BESS Smith & Nephew travelling Fellowship to two BESS Travelling Fellowships

BESS Depuy Mitek travelling Fellowship to BESS Seniors Travelling Fellowship

BESS Donjoy Allied Health Professional Fellowship to BESS Allied Health Professional Fellowship

BESS Acumed Mayo Elbow Fellowship to BESS Mayo Elbow Fellowship

BESS Arthrex Continuing Professional Development Award to BESS Continuing Professional Development Award.

Private follow up consultations and injections:

I have had a number of queries raised by members in the last few months with regard to the withdrawal of funding of injections during follow up consultations by private insurers. Mike Thomas, our representative on the  FIPO council, has been working hard to resolve this issue.

We have had some good news about this and can confirm that BUPA have decided to remove certain procedures from this same day rule. Injections done at follow up consultations will now be funded as they were before.

I look forward to meeting you all in Newcastle
