Call for Papers
BESS invites the submission of a 300 word abstract for papers for the above meeting. If the abstract is accepted for podium or poster presentation it will be published in the Proceedings supplement of Shoulder and Elbow. The paper will be accepted on the understanding that the senior author will be present at the meeting to support the presentation. No individual person is allowed to present more than one paper at the meeting but can be named on other papers presented. The Lipman Kessel prize to the presenter of the best paper will be awarded at the end of the annual meeting. The poster prize will be awarded to the presenter of the best poster which will be judged on day two of the meeting. There will be a Paul Calvert Prize for the best Clinical Research Paper. An Ian Kelly Endeavour prize and best AHP presentation prize will also be awarded.
All submissions must be via the BESS website bess.org.uk . All communications regarding the paper will be by email only to the corresponding author. We expect to accept the top 42 submissions for podium presentations and the next 20 best submissions for poster presentation. There is no facility to submit a paper for consideration for poster only.
The deadline for submissions will be midnight 2nd April 2012. No submissions will be accepted, under any circumstances, after this date.
Please note that applicants are encouraged to submit their abstracts early and to prepare the text carefully prior to on-line submission according to the instruction for authors (see web site). Amendments are not accepted after submission and subsequent duplicates will automatically be deleted.
Confirmation of submission will be sent by email. If not received within 2 hours then the abstract has not been successfully submitted. We encourage authors to retain this confirmation email in case of dispute. The judging committee will not accept any responsibility for missing abstracts where the authors cannot produce the submission confirmation email. BESS News
National Trials and the need for evidence of treatment effectiveness in Shoulder Surgery
All members will be aware of the recent publication of lists of "procedures of low value" and the restriction of funding for knee arthroscopy both in the NHS and by Insurers. It is probable that similar initiatives will affect shoulder surgery, particularly arthroscopic surgery, in the near future.
UKUFF Trial
The UKUFF trial funded by NIHR is nearing completion of recruitment (end of January 2012). This large National Randomised Clinical Trial of 267 patients will compare the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of open and arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.
Well done to all the BESS surgeons and their teams who have participated in this trial
ProFHER Trial
This trial funded by NIHR has completed recruitment ahead of schedule and has been a resounding success. It compares surgical and conservative treatment of proximal humeral fractures and will report within the next years. Again thanks to all BESS surgeons who have contributed and have helped Amar Rangan and his research team.
CSAW Trial
This is a new trial funded by Arthritis Research UK. It will explore the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of arthroscopic sub-acromial decompression in 300 patients.
Any BESS members wishing to consider participating should contact Andy Carr in Oxford.
Pump priming research grants - Call for proposals
BESS Research Committee calls for proposals for award of up to five research grants of up to £3000 each. The purpose of these grants is to encourage clinical research into shoulder and elbow disorders. Proposals for projects that are intended to be on the NIHR portfolio would qualify, as this pump priming grant would then allow the grant holder to access research network support to supplement this funding for completion of their project.
Application forms are available in Grants section of BESS website. Please e-mail your full proposal to: Amar.Rangan@stees.nhs.uk
Last date for submission: 30st April 2012
Proposals will be judged by an appointed committee and grants awarded at the next BESS meeting in June 2012, Torbay.
Amar Rangan
