Dear member

I hope you have recovered from what was an excellent BESS meeting at Liverpool.

This brief letter is to clarify some of the issues that were discussed at the AGM and during the Hot Topics.

1) BESS Website

Once the new look BESS website is up and running I will send each of you access to the members’ area. The members’ area will have sensitive information that cannot be displayed on the public areas. These will include

    * Details about PbR including the pick list, tips and the discharge coding sheet
    * Details about the ACCEA application and tips
    * Link to SEND
    * Updates regarding the private codes

2)BESS Journal

The AGM voted in favour of a BESS journal. The aim will be to launch the new Journal at BESS 2009 in London.  Further information about submissions, progress etc will be posted on the website at regular intervals.

3)PbR

Please use the pick sheets and the discharge coding sheets. This will ensure that our data for this year will be accurate. Those of you who did not manage to get these can download these documents once the members ‘area is open. Until such time email me and I will send the documents to you.

There appeared to be some confusion about the codes on the pick list. I will try and clarify that.

    * For each procedure all the codes next to it need to be used.
    * Some procedures have just one code whereas some have upto three.
    * The W codes is the procedure code
    * The Z code is a site code.....signifying the anatomical site eg. Scapula, olecranon
    * The Y code stands for - arthroscopic approach. If you perform an open procedure all you will need to do is remove the Y code
    * If you perform multiple procedures(ASD and cuff repair) use codes for all procedures.

For people who want to know more about the CCs please go to

http://www.ic.nhs.uk/our-services/standards-and-classifications/casemix/hrg4/prepare-for-hrg4

Half way down the page is the heading: HRG4 Definitions (Updated Jan 08)

Download the Zip file attached to this section and extract the Chapters HA, HB and HC. At the end of each chapter are the list of CCs.

4) BESS membership Update

A large number of you updated your details on the BESS database at Liverpool. Can I ask people who did not manage to do so and people who did not attend the Liverpool meeting to email me their email addresses that I can use for correspondence.
